What does the future hold for someone who is not saved?

The simple truth is that the future for someone who is not saved is not good at all. God paints a very vivid picture in His Holy word the Bible of what the future holds for a person who is not saved. Let us first look at Luke 16:19-31, here we find one of the most vivid pictures in the Bible of what will happen to everyone who rejects God, and rejects God's free gift of salvation through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.

There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he {The rich man} lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he {The rich man} cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me , and send Lazarus that he {Lazarus} may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my {The rich man} tongue; for I {The rich man} am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said {To the rich man}, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he {Lazarus} is comforted and you {The rich man} are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us. Then he {The rich man} said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him {Lazarus} to my father's house, for I {The rich man} have five brothers, that he {Lazarus} may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment. Abraham said to him {The rich man}, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he {The rich man} said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent. But he {Abraham} said to him {The rich man}, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead. Luke 16:19-31.

The first thing that we see in this passage is, that this rich man dressed very well each and every day, and had everything his heart could desire. We also see that he cared for no one but himself. Everyday he passed by the beggar man at his gate and just completely ignored him. From all that he had this rich man made no provision what so ever for this poor beggar man. This poor beggar man sat at the rich man's gate everyday, begging for the crumbs that fell from this rich man's table, but he received no kindness or mercy from this rich man. It is so obvious that this rich man was so consumed with himself that he had no room in his heart for anyone else, not even God. It reminds me of the question that the Lord Jesus Christ asked his disciples in Matthew 16:26,

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:26.

The answer to this question for this rich man was obviously his worldly wealth. When we look at this poor beggar man who was laid at the rich man's gates every day, we see a man who was very hungry, and who was suffering a lot of pain, his body was covered in sores so he was very sick indeed. He was obviously to sick to work. This beggar man could have decided to steal some food to ease his hunger, and to steal some money to pay for treatment for his sickness, but he did not do this. Instead he took the only honest way available to him, he became a beggar, he decided to rely on the goodness of others for his needs, instead of being dishonest and stealing what he needed. His need to be right with God was greater than his physical needs, you could say that this beggar man was willing to follow God at any cost, even if that cost meant that he would physically die. We can see from the reading of this passage that this rich man paid the ultimate price for his self indulgence and rejection of God. We see from this passage that both of these men died physically, but they ended up in very different places. The beggar man died and was carried by the Angels to Abraham’s bosom, a place of beauty and peace and joy beyond imagination and full of the love and the glory of God, where he would live for all eternity in the presence of God. But the rich man ended up in a very different place altogether, a place called Hades, or as it is more commonly known today, Hell. As we read the rest of this passage we can clearly see that this rich man is fully alive and aware of where he is. He can hear, he can see, he can talk, he can think and reason. He can also feel thirst and pain and torment. We can clearly see that he is very worried about his five brothers which are still alive, and he does not want them to end up in Hades, or Hell where he is, notice that he calls it a place of torment. This is where the rich man will be for all eternity, for ever and ever, so will everyone who rejects God’s free gift of Salvation.

When we read Matthew 25:31-46, we see another very clear picture of what will happen to those who reject God’s free gift of Salvation so that they can continue to live a life of sin.

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in. I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And the King will answer and say to them, Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels, for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me. Then they also will answer Him, saying,  Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You? Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.  Matthew 25:31-46.

In this passage we learn two very important things, the first thing we learn is that when we help someone in need, whether it is by giving them some money or some food or by simply giving them a drink of water, it is as if we were giving those things to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Then of course the opposite also applies, if we pass by people in need, and just ignore them and their needs, then it is as if we were passing by and ignoring the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Now the end of this passage makes it very clear that everyone who is like the rich man, who live their lives in a state of self-indulgence and sin, and rejection of God, and do not accept God’s free gift of Salvation, will be sent away into everlasting punishment. This means that like the rich man they will spend eternity in the torments and punishments of hell.

The final verse that we will look at in answering this question is in the book of Revelation, 21:8.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. Revelation 21:8.

This verse is very descriptive and very clear, it give us a list of the types of people who will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven, and we do well to take this warning very seriously.

The Cowardly, are people who let fear stop them from accepting and following the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. They are afraid of what their parents, or their brothers or sisters or their friends would say or think of them, if they became Born-Again-Christians, and so they reject God’s free gift of Salvation.

The Unbelieving, are people who just plain refuse to believe in God, no matter how much evidence that you present to them that proves beyond doubt that God really exists, These people will always find a reason not to believe, not even if one were to rise from the dead would these people believe in God.

The Abominable, are people who get great pleasure from committing the most horrible crimes, such as the torture of another human being, rape and paedophilia, such people will be cast into Hell and suffer everlasting punishment.

Murderers, are those who can kill another human being without a second thought, no remorse, no regret, no guilt. Such murderers will also be cast into Hell and suffer everlasting punishment.

The sexually immoral, What does it mean to be sexually immoral? If a person is married and they have sex with someone other than their spouse, then they are committing the sin of adultery and are being sexually immoral. If a single person is having sex they are committing the sin of fornication and are being sexually immoral. If a man is having sex with another man, or a woman is having sex with another woman they are committing the sin of homosexual fornication and are being sexually immoral. Homosexual sex is strictly forbidden by God as unnatural and totally perverted. The bottom line is simply this, anyone having sex outside of the bonds of marriage, marriage being between one man and one woman, are committing the sin of sexual immorality. Those who continue to be sexually immoral will also suffer everlasting punishment.

Sorcerers, are people who practice what is known as the black arts. All of the black arts have some form of devil worship attached to them. These people are involved in the casting of magic spells, being in contact with spirits, reading tarot cards, telling fortunes, and are involved in various other kinds of devil worship as well. God makes it very clear that the practice of such things is not allowed among His people.

There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD,  Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

Everyone who is involved in any way is these things will suffer eternal punishment in Hell.

Idolaters, Are those who worship idols, or pray to the people or things that the idol represents. For example in Hinduism they pray to all different kinds of gods, such as snakes gods and lion gods and elephant gods and people who are long dead,  believing that these animals and people who are long dead have some kind of power to help them in their time of need. In Catholicism they do the very same thing, the pray to the saints, and there are a great many of them. They kneel before the statue of their chosen saint and pray to the person that the statue represents, in the hope that the person who is dead for hundreds of years has the power to help them. This is idolatry, and God strictly forbids this practice. God says in the Bible that you make all your needs known to Him, and Him only, through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, and God will hear and answer all your prayers. Sometimes the answer to your prayer is yes, and sometimes the answer is no, but God will always answer. If a person continues to practice idolatry, then they will suffer everlasting punishment in Hell.

Liars, are people that hate the truth, because the truth hinders them in some way in their lives, or prevents them from getting the things that they are after. Whether the lie is designed to make a person look good and receive the praise of other people, or to help a person make money, or to cause hurt to someone makes no difference, a lie is still a lie. Lies come in various shapes and sizes to suit whatever the situation is at the time. In the world that we live in today lies have been separated into two different categories, the big lie, which causes harm, this is seen as very bad, and the white lie, which is seen as doing no real harm, and is seen as acceptable. God makes it very clear that no lie whether big or small is acceptable to Him, and God also makes it very clear that everyone who continues to lie will suffer everlasting punishment in Hell.

This is what the future holds for those who do not repent of their sin and accept God’s free gift of Salvation.
